He’s a singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, and stylist…introducing Derek Dominique. We had the great opportunity to sit down with this multi-talented artist. We talked about his music, early beginnings, and the value of PERSISTENCE. We can’t get enough of one of H-Town’s finest!

I was always getting in trouble in school, not for nothing bad, but just because I was a class clown clown and I was always trying to like make a beat on a table…

Derek Dominique (talking about his childhood)

One of the things that stood out to us about Derek, was his emphasis on the support he receives from his family and how close he is with his mom.

My mama came to the school. I didn’t know she was coming. So, we’re in the middle of she waited till we took the test. This is right before lunch. So by 11 o’clock in the morning, I’ll never forget this. I’m writing and all I heard was this girl next to me say, Yo mama here. Everybody looked at the door, my mom standing at the door and I was just like, ‘Hey mom,’ and she was like, ‘okay,’ and she just kept walking to the back (by the teacher )and all I heard was my mama say, “finish the test.” My heart started beating. I was like, ‘oh, man, this is not gonna go good.’ So ,I’m finishing my test. All I hear is quiet in there. All I hear is my mama come to the front of the classroom in front of everybody. She was like, ‘are you a class clown?’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no.’ And, I’m looking at my teacher. My teacher is standing in the back looking at me. My mom said ‘stand up.‘

She stood up in front of my entire class… my mom took off her belt.
