Well… that was interesting.
So, initially, T.I. was slated to do battle with Jeezy in the latest installment of the VERZUZ series. However, he received a bit of criticism for it, especially following a hypothetical session with Busta Rhymes initially proposed by Fat Joe.
Jeezy then revealed in a Hot 97 interview that he reached out to Gucci’s camp about doing a VERZUZ, but that he “respectfully declined.” Gucci, on social media, also said that he wouldn’t do a VERZUZ at all for less than a million dollars.
That check cleared, because the two rivals (more on that later) held their VERZUZ event at Atlanta staple Magic City. Considering that the two have had long-standing issues since falling out over the lone collaboration “Icy” that ultimately — and literally — turned murderous, many (us included) were wondering if this would go off without a hitch.
Well, for the most part it did. Following an introduction from Georgia congresswoman-slash-boss Stacey Abrams, the two essentially did not acknowledge each other on stage (and, understandably, stayed away from each other too) the entire time. Gucci would immediately reference their beef, with his first two songs being “Round 1” and “Benchwarmers:” diss songs. Jeezy, on the other hand, would keep things a bit more diplomatic, and dug into his trove of 2000s-era street bangers (which, again, Gucci would respond by calling him out for not playing more recent songs).
The entire event was contentious (to say the least), and it’s clear that the two still do not like each other (someone on Twitter hilariously referred to their showdown as “Brandy vs. Monica with guns”) as they exchanged barbs (hell, Gucci performed “Truth,” in its entirety, while staring Jeezy down) the entire time. However, the two would close the show out with a performance of “Icy” together for the first time in… who knows how long… ever? So… progress, I suppose.
Per usual, the DopeHouse got you with a playlist of all the songs they played throughout the night. Check it out and enjoy.
