Just a day after teasing its existence, Netflix has released the official trailer for its upcoming Britney Spears documentary Britney vs. Spears.

The forthcoming project will examine what led to the pop star’s controversial conservatorship and her battle to end it. Britney vs. Spears is set to be released on September 28, just a day before Spears’ next highly-anticipated court hearing.

The trailer arrives just two weeks after Britney’s father filed a petition on September 7 to end the singer’s 13-year conservatorship. James “Jamie” Spears’ filed the documents at Los Angeles Superior Court, stating that his daughter “is entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required.” The filing went on to say that due to Britney’s current situation “grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist.”

Spears’ conservatorship was implemented following her highly-publicized mental breakdown in 2008. Jamie and Andrew Wallet were subsequently appointed as co-conservators with Wallet resigning in 2019. Bessemer Trust Co. was later added as co-conservator.

Netflix’s Britney documentary follows Hulu’s Framing Britney Spears, which premiered in February as part of its The New York Times Presents series.

Spears addressed the documentary in a since-deleted Instagram post, writing that it made her cry for “two weeks,” and that she was “embarrassed by the light they put me in.”
