Quentin Tarantino, who’s spoken out on multiple occasions regarding his intentions of retiring after the release of his 10th film, was presented with a lifetime achievement award from horror icon Dario Argento at the Rome Film Festival this week. Amid the festivities, the writer and director shared an assortment of thoughts on what could be next in his catalog.

Per Variety, Tarantino was asked during the festival if his next film will be the long-teased Kill Bill 3, prompting a “Why not?” from the Oscar winner. More realistic, however, is that Tarantino’s next project—in addition to his stated plans for a film criticism book and potential TV series—will be something else.

“But first I want to make a comedy,” he said when speaking with Fabio Fazio of RAI over the weekend. And on Monday in a conversation with Rome Film Festival chief Antonio Monda, he shared some details on something that’s “a piece of something else” that he’s working on.

“I’m looking forward to shooting that [thing] because it’s going to be really fun,” Tarantino said of the mystery project. “Because I want to shoot it in the Spaghetti Western style where everybody’s speaking a different language. … The Mexican Bandido is an Italian; the hero is an American; the bad sheriff is a German; the Mexican saloon girl is Israeli. And everybody is speaking a different language. And you [the actors] just know: OK, when he’s finished talking then I can talk.”

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released to acclaim in 2019, marked Tarantino’s ninth feature-length film as a director. If his repeatedly mentioned retiring-after-10-movies plan holds true, that makes whatever ends up being his next feature—potentially, at least—his final one.

As for Kill Bill 3, Tarantino previously addressed the possibility of returning to the fan-adored martial arts universe led by Uma Thurman in an interview with Joe Rogan over the summer. Among the possible casting choices entertained by Tarantino during the interview was the addition of Thurman’s daughter Maya Hawke, who in this hypothetical sequel scenario could play the Bride’s grown-up child.
