The creators of a buzzed-about Superman comic reportedly asked the LAPD to patrol their homes after fans of the series threatened them for making the latest iteration of the superhero bisexual.
TMZ says law enforcement sources told the outlet LAPD officers were dispatched to look after the homes of a few of the comic’s illustrators and “production staffers,” after it was revealed Superman will come out as bisexual in the Nov. 9 issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El. When the Man of Steel’s sexuality was announced back in October, it triggered backlash. The threats apparently have not been credible, but the LAPD patrolled out of an abundance of caution.
It was revealed on National Coming Out day that Jon, the son of Clark Kent and latest to don the Superman symbol, will begin a relationship with reporter Jay Nakamura, a similar story arc to his father, who fell in love with reporter Lois Lane. The two lovers will share a kiss in issue #5.
“Over the years in this industry, it probably won’t surprise you to hear I’ve had queer characters and storylines rejected. I felt like I was letting down people I loved every time this happened,” Superman writer Tom Taylor told IGN of the reveal. “When I was asked if I wanted to write a new Superman with a new #1 for the DC Universe, I knew replacing Clark with another straight white savior could be a real opportunity missed. I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes. Today, Superman, the strongest superhero on the planet, is coming out.”
