Google PlayJason Momoa and Lisa Bonet have decided to split.
The couple announced the decision in a joint statement posted on social media Wednesday, more than 16 years after they started their relationship. Momoa and Bonet told fans they still have love for one another, but said it was necessary to go separate ways in wake of recent changes.
“We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding ~and our family is of no exception,” read the statement shared on the Aquaman star’s Instagram account. “Feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so~ We share our Family news~ That we are parting ways in marriage.”
They continued: “We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~ But so that~ as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty. The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~to be who we are learning to become… Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life & our Children Teaching our Children What’s possible ~ Living the Prayer May Love Prevail.”
Momoa and Bonet began dating in 2005, but didn’t tie the knot until October 2017. During their relationship, the couple welcomed two children together: a daughter, Lola Iolani Momoa, in summer 2007 and a son, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa, in late 2008. Bonet is also the mother of Zoë Kravitz, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Lenny Kravitz.
Bonet spoke about her relationship with Momoa during a 2018 interview with Porter. The actress said they had met at a jazz club in 2004, and have immediately felt a connection.
“I can’t say it was full-on from the moment we saw each other, but we have been together from the day that we met,” she said. “In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do. He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style!”
