Man Arrested After 73-Year-Old Mom Accidentally Served His Weed Brownies at Senior Center, Now Facing Felony Charge

A South Dakota man is facing a felony drug charge after his 73-year-old mother accidentally served his weed brownies to senior citizens at a local community center.

NBC News reports Michael James Koranda, 46, was arrested on Jan. 5 for possession of a controlled substance, a felony that carries a maximum prison sentence of five years and a $10,000 fine upon conviction.

Koranda’s arrest came after police received several calls about “possible poisonings” at the Tabor Community Center. After speaking with several of the affected seniors, authorities discovered that they had all eaten brownies brought by Michael’s mother Irene Koranda.

According to the affidavit obtained by NBC, Koranda admitted that he brought THC butter back from a recent visit to Colorado. Koranda claimed he went to bed after making the concoction, at which point his mother unwittingly took the brownies to her card game at the community center. 

“Michael admitted to bringing 1 pound of THC butter to make the pan of brownies and then went to bed, and his mother unknowingly took the brownies to the card game where several people ate them,” the affidavit stated. “Michael said the remaining half pound of butter was still at his house.”

Koranda was released on an unsecured bond of $3,000, and is due in court later this month.
