Google PlayNow that The Suicide Squad spinoff Peacemaker has debuted on HBO Max, series creator James Gunn has shared the fun, dance-filled opening credits—and star John Cena calls the result the “most non-skippable title sequence.”
Focused on Cena’s titular character, who debuted in Gunn’s film last summer, Peacemaker opens with one of silliest credit sequences to grace a superhero series. Featuring the cast dancing along to Wig Wam’s “Do You Wanna Taste it,” the opening acts as a great reminder that Peacemaker—which just premiered its first three episodes—is going for a different tone than some DC fans might be used to.
Upon sharing the goofy opening credits on Twitter, Gunn noted it was due to “incredibly popular request.”
Cena also tweeted out the clip, writing, “They said ‘can [Peacemaker] dance?’ He said: ‘Does #Peacemaker love freedom and Eagly and kick-ass rock and roll music?’ They looked at him silently. And then we created this! The quest to make the most non-skippable title sequence was a team effort!”
When Complex spoke to Gunn, who wrote all eight episodes and directed five of them, he said he was approached with the opportunity to make a series based on any of The Suicide Squad’s cast.
“I think I could have picked anybody and they would have been OK,” Gunn said. “‘If you made a series with any one character who would it be?’ And I said, ‘Peacemaker.’ In the movie, we get to see the backgrounds of Bloodsport, of Ratcatcher, we learn a lot about Harley. We learn a lot about other characters, but I felt with Peacemaker, we really just scratched the surface of who this guy is, what makes this douchebag tick. I called up John immediately and I said, ‘Hey, do you want to do this thing?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’”
Peacemaker co-stars Danielle Brooks, Annie Chang, Steve Agee, Chukwudi Iwuji, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Robert Patrick, and more and is streaming on HBO Max now, with new episodes coming on Thursdays.
