Rachel Zegler apologized for reading some of Britney Spears’ tweets in a dramatic fashion, after fans accused her of making light of Spears’ familial problems.
The Golden Globe-winning actress originally posted a video of her reciting Britney’s tweets about her sister Jamie Lynn, which came amid their ongoing public fallout over Jamie’s new book.
It wasn’t long before Zegler faced the wrath of people who accused her of being tone deaf.
On Monday, the 20-year-old West Side Story star tweeted out an apology, promising that she didn’t intend to disrespect Britney and that she encourages her fans to lift up the pop icon, who had just celebrated the end of her 13-year conservatorship.
“Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Britney and am rooting for her always,” Zegler tweeted. “While I meant no disrespect whatsoever, I should have thought about how this could be perceived, and I’m so sorry for upsetting or disappointing anyone. This is not a situation to be taken lightly, and we should all be lifting Britney up in this pivotal time. Thanks for hearing me out, and a big thank you to all who held me accountable.”
This all comes after Britney expressed disappointment in her sister’s ABC News interview, in which Jamie Lynn spoke with Juju Chang about Britney’s “erratic” behavior 15 years ago, in promotion of her new book Things I Should Have Said. Jamie’s book follows the termination of Britney’s conservatorship in November.
