Cardi B has pledged to cover the funeral costs and burial expenses for victims of a recent Bronx apartment building fire. She’s also reported to be partnering with the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, a not-for-profit organization that works closely with multiple city agencies and offices.
In a statement shared with CNN, the “Up” artist sent “prayers and condolences” to those affected by the fire, which claimed the lives of 17 people this month. “I’m extremely proud to be from the Bronx and I have lots of family and friends who live and work there still. So, when I heard about the fire and all of the victims, I knew I needed to do something to help. I cannot begin to imagine the pain and anguish that the families of the victims are experiencing, but I hope that not having to worry about the costs associated with burying their loved ones will help as they move forward and heal,” Cardi said.
Among the 17 killed in the tragic fire were eight children. Last week, a couple who survived the blaze filed a lawsuit alleging that building owners failed to adequately maintain the facility. The suit, as reported by Bloomberg, also sees the couple allege that multiple safety issues were present in the building ranging from “non-functioning fire escapes” to the lack of self-closing doors.
Previous efforts to help the victims of the fire include a fundraising push from Fat Joe, as well as a collaborative Awake NY and No Company t-shirt featuring art by Shirt King Phade and benefitting those affected by the tragedy. Proceeds from the latter, as previously reported, will go toward the Until Freedom Network nonprofit.
