HBO Max Not Moving Ahead With ‘The Boondocks’ Reboot

According to sources familiar with Sony Pictures Animation, the highly-anticipated reboot of The Boondocks is no longer happening at HBO Max.

As Deadline reported, Aaron McGruder’s animated comedy will not be returning despite receiving a two season order from HBO in 2019. The show was originally set to return with a 50-minute special back in fall 2020, but that never materialized. Sony is reportedly in the process of figuring out other options for more Boondocks, which originally aired for four seasons on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block.

The latest reports on the status of the show come shortly after series voice talent Cedric Yarbrough, who plays Tom DuBois on the show, said the reboot was shelved. “I hate to say this, but… The show is, right now, not coming back,” Yarbrough said in an appearance on the Geekset podcast, per Movie Web. “I don’t know if this is breaking news, but we’ve been wanting to do the show. And Sony… they decided they’re going to pull the plug. So, I don’t know. Hopefully, maybe one day we’ll be able to revisit. If we don’t then that’s what that is. But, I wish the show was coming back.”

Series creator Aaron McGruder was set to return as showrunner and executive producer on the project, although it’s not clear if it entered production or not. Sony Animation and HBO Max have yet to comment on the sudden cancellation of the show.

Back in 2020, Adult Swim announced it had pulled several episodes of the show “due to cultural sensitivities.” Aqua Teen Hunger Force, another one of the programming block’s most beloved shows, was also impacted and saw several episodes pulled.
