A French man visiting New York City was shot multiple times in the legs and groin during an attempted robbery Friday morning.

The New York Post reports Pierrick Jamaux, a 33-year-old cryptocurrency expert, was exiting an Uber at his hotel in Midtown Manhattan when a man approached him and demanded Jamaux hand over his Richard Mille watch, which boasts an average cost of $200,000, with some designs going for as high as $1.3 million.

The gunman opened fire before Jamaux could react, striking his legs and groin. Jamaux’s companion, a 25-year-old woman, jumped on the gunman’s back before the suspect fled the scene. The suspect’s attempted robbery failed, as nothing was stolen from the victim. Police recovered five shell casings from the scene.

Jamaux was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was subsequently released in stable condition with multiple entry and exit wounds to both legs.

As reported by the New York Post on Saturday, the French-born Jamaux lives in Hong Kong and is the founder of Hi, an online banking planform dealing in cryptocurrency, savings and investments. Jamaux, whose company bio lists him as a “lifestyle guru,” frequently flashes his flashy, expensive timepieces on his Instagram page.

The suspect who shot Jamaux is currently at large, though law enforcement confirmed that he could be seen in surveillance video walking north on Lexington before dropping a dark bundle into a garbage bin.
