Fresh off directing three episodes of the Disney+ Star Wars series The Book of Boba Fett, Robert Rodriguez is set to helm a Spy Kids reboot for Netflix.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, the streaming platform announced it’s teaming with Rodriguez to relaunch the property. He will write, direct, and produce the new film, which will be the first in the family comedy series since 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. Rodriguez launched the series in 2001, and acted as director/writer/producer on all four entries.
The original Spy Kids starred Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as secret agents rescued by their children, portrayed by Alexa Vegas and Daryl Sabara. Netflix has yet to announce details.
This isn’t Rodriguez’s first project for the streamer, as he served as an executive producer on the short-lived animated series Spy Kids: Mission Critical in 2018. He also directed/wrote/produced the 2020 Netflix superhero film We Can Be Heroes. He recently wrapped production on the Ben Affleck-starring sci-fi thriller Hypnotic, although a release date has yet to be announced.
