Google PlayAmy Schumer wants the record to show that she is not a stealer-of-jokes, which she made sure to hammer home during a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live!
During the show, Schumer addressed allegations on social media that she stole a joke about Leonardo DiCaprio that she made at the Oscars. The joke in question was tweeted verbatim back in December 2021.
Schumer said during the show that she doesn’t go on Twitter, for the sake of her mental health, and that the joke she told was written by someone else and not stolen from the social media platform.
“OK. Well, I would like to say, I haven’t personally been on Twitter,” Schumer said. “I’ve had my assistant do it, just so I can remain alive and not kill myself. And also, that joke was written by Suli McCullough. But I thank you guys, always, for making sure that I don’t start thievery.”
To reinforce her point, the comedian also noted that she recently took a lie detector test for a Vanity Fair video where she was asked if she ever stole a joke in her life, which she denied and was proven to be telling the truth.
“I just got to do a lie-detector test on Vanity Fair and they asked me, thank God, ‘Have you ever stolen a joke?’ and I said no, and it was ‘that’s true.’ So, everybody just chill,” she added. “It’s crazy. I’m funny enough, I don’t need to steal shit.”
Schumer also addressed Louis C.K.’s recent Grammy win for Best Comedy Album
“I don’t think it feels good,” Schumer said. “It doesn’t feel good. I think it doesn’t feel good.”
In the aftermath of Will Smith smacking Chris Rock at the Oscars a few weeks ago, Schumer has said that she still feels “traumatized” by the incident, and that she was disappointed that the academy let that slide but wouldn’t let her tell a joke about Alec Baldwin, per Deadline.
“It was really upsetting, but I think the best way to comfort ourselves would be for me to say the Oscar jokes that I wasn’t allowed to say on TV,” she said before delivering a flurry of different jokes about scandals involving entertainers like James Franco’s sexual misconduct allegations and the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust last year.
“Don’t Look Up is the name of a movie? More like don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun,” she said, adding, “I wasn’t allowed to say any of that, but you can just come up and [slap] someone.”
