While speaking at a rally in Selma, North Carolina on Saturday, former President Donald Trump made what is perhaps his boldest claim to date.
As reported by Newsweek, Trump shared a story in which a friend supposedly praised him for sustaining two impeachments and the ongoing trials and investigations tied to the January 6 riots.
“You know, you’ve been investigated years and years, millions and millions of pages of documents, they found nothing,” Trump recalled his friend saying, before nodding at a local sheriff. “You are the cleanest on Earth when you think about it.”
“I’ve got to be the cleanest,” Trump said. “I think I’m the most honest human being, perhaps, that God ever created.”
Of course, Trump’s record is in fact not squeaky clean. He is the only president in the history of the United States who’s been impeached on two separate occasions, and has been admonished for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Earlier this week, in a video published by The Atlantic, the former president admitted that he lost to President Joe Biden.
“I didn’t win the election,” Trump said while speaking to a group of historians who were assembled by Julian Zelizer, a Princeton professor and editor of The Presidency of Donald Trump: A First Historical Assessment.
“We had a deal all set, and then when the election was rigged and lost,” he continued, “what happened is that the deal went away.”
