The culture has lost another legend.

After a long and strenuous battle with COVID, DJ Kay Slay has passed away at the age of 55.

“Our hearts are broken by the passing of Keith Grayson, professionally known as DJ Kay Slay,” the late DJ’s family wrote in a touching tribute for The Post. “A dominant figure in Hip Hop culture with millions of fans worldwide, DJ Kay Slay will be remembered for his passion and excellence with a legacy that will transcend generations.”

“In memory of DJ Kay Slay, our family wishes to thank all of his friends, fans, and supporters for their prayers and well wishes during this difficult time,” they continued. “We ask that you respect our privacy as we grieve this tragic loss.”

From his early days in Style Wars as a respected graffiti artist to the hundreds upon hundreds of mixtapes and recent times where he’d have 50 emcees on one record, Kay Slay was the very definition of Hip-Hop. He lived and fought for the culture with every breath. His presence will forever be missed.

RIP DJ Kay Slay

Dez. The Drama King. Mr. Smack Your Favorite DJ.

Not only did he premiere “Ether,” host Dipset’s first mixtape and unleash countless songs and freestyles. But he was also featured in the movie ‘Style Wars’ in 1983. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. 🕊 pic.twitter.com/Bm2gzfEGHK
