Sony’s Columbia Pictures has announced that a new Karate Kid film will hit theaters in June 2024. While Netflix’s Cobra Kai has breathed new life into the franchise, the series’ co-creator has revealed that his team is not involved in the forthcoming movie.

On Saturday, Jon Hurwitz, co-creator of Cobra Kai, took to Twitter to respond to a fan who asked if he’ll be working on Sony’s upcoming Karate Kid spin-off.

“Have you heard anything about a new movie for karate kid??? Is it real?” the person asked, to which Hurwitz replied, “The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well.”

The Karate Kid franchise launched in 1984, en route to spawning three sequels: The Karate Kid Part II (1986), The Karate Kid Part III (1989), and The Next Karate Kid (1994). Sony’s forthcoming film will mark the franchise’s first offering since the 2010 reboot starring Jaden Smith. There are no stars or directors attached to the film as of yet.

The fifth season of Cobra Kai premiered on Netflix earlier this month.
