Adam Sandler’s next film will see him reuniting with the consistently acclaimed duo behind Uncut Gems, Josh and Benny Safdie.

Sandler, who recently announced a run of tour dates that’ll keep him on the road through mid-November, gave fans an update on the previously teased project in a Vanity Fair interview published this week. The hugely anticipated film, which (at least publicly) remains untitled at this time, was mentioned amid Sandler’s reflections on his script selection process.

“I’m going to do a movie with the Safdie brothers and we’re supposed to start in the late winter, right,” Sandler told Katey Rich. “So part of my brain right now is like, ‘I’m on tour.’ Then once that Safdie brothers movie starts—and I love those guys, I know we’re going to dedicate ourselves into working our asses off and making sure it’s as good as it can be, and I know that takes a lot of time. So part of my brain is going, ‘Wow, once that movie starts I’m in deep and our lives are going to change.’”

Elaborating further, Sandler noted the tunnel vision required to pull off projects of this type while hitting a targeted level of quality and estimated that he and the Safdies will be working for “a few months” behind that united goal. He also confirmed that he expects this production to be “as intense as” the process behind the widely celebrated Uncut Gems, for which Sandler ultimately took home an Independent Spirit Award.

“Yeah, because of how much these guys care. And how much I don’t want to let them down,” Sandler told VF, adding that he has “so much” respect for the Safdies, who care deeply about “every frame” of their films.

Thus far, Sandler and the Safdie brothers have worked together on both Uncut Gems (which also boasts the feature film debut of Julia Fox) and the short film “Goldman v Silverman.” Most recently, Sandler starred in Netflix’s Jeremiah Zagar-directed basketball drama Hustle. The film was met with strong reviews upon its release in June, specifically for Sandler’s performance as 76ers scout Stanley Sugerman.

Surrounding Uncut Gems’ release back in 2019, co-writer Ronald Bronstein spoke with Ariel LeBeau for Complex. In the resulting interview, Bronstein detailed his creative process and opened up about the ins and outs of working with the Safdie brothers. Revisit that discussion here.
