Loblaws’ attempt at cooling rising prices at the grocery store by so-called “freezing” No Name brand prices has been met with criticism, with many calling this a “publicity stunt.”
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said the day Loblaws announced their price freeze on No Name products was also the same day that Parliament was set to vote on the NDP’s motion to investigate what they call “greedflation.”
Twitter users also said the price freeze comes after they had already raised prices on other in-house brands such as President’s Choice products. One customer noticed that within the span of two weeks, President’s Choice chicken strips had become more expensive.
Twitter users also denounced larger media and publications for not being more critical of Loblaws’ price freezes despite soaring profits since the pandemic began.
Some other reactions from Twitter:
Loblaws reported a Q2 profit of $385 million after profits soared 40 percent in Q1.
