Jim Carrey, who has just under 19 million followers on the platform, says he’s leaving Twitter.

In a tweet shared Tuesday, Carrey announced his departure while also sharing an animation project he worked on with Jimmy Hayward. The cartoon in question is based on one of Carrey’s paintings, which he routinely shared to Twitter over the years.

“I’m leaving Twitter, but 1st here’s a cartoon I made with my friend Jimmy Hayward,” Carrey said. “It’s based on my painting of a crazy old Lighthouse Keeper, standing naked in a storm, summoning the angels and shining his lamp to guide us through a treacherous night. I love you all so much!”

Hayward, meanwhile, also shared the same animation to Instagram while providing some additional backstory on its development and those involved with bringing Carrey’s painting to life.

“Jim Carrey quit Twitter today, and used this art as his parting shot,” Hayward said.

As Carrey followers will note, he shared a piece to Twitter earlier this month mocking Elon Musk, whose Twitter takeover has spurred ongoing criticism, not to mention growing concerns about the fate of the platform itself. Musk, Carrey said, is “boldly going where no unbridled ego has gone before.”

In recent days, attention has turned to the end of Twitter’s enforcement of its COVID-19 misinformation policy. In an update to its designated misinformation page, Twitter said it was “no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy.” The pandemic, however, is very much not over.
