Emily Blunt on Tom Cruise Jokingly Telling Her ‘Stop Being Such a P***y’ During Intense ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Shoot

Fans of the Doug Liman-directed Edge of Tomorrow should definitely carve out time for Emily Blunt’s recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast.

During her appearance on Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett’s Wonder and Amazon-presented series, Blunt opened up about the experience of shooting the acclaimed hit with Tom Cruise, including sharing some insight on the filmmakers’ dedication to the art form.

About 25 minutes into the discussion, Blunt praised her co-star as “so brilliant” in the film, noting that they both trained extensively for the shoot, which marked her “first foray” into the more action-focused territory. As Blunt recalled, Cruise told her early into the production that the film also marked the “deep end of action” for him, as well.

“We had to wear these really enormous robotic suits, which I think would have been great if they could’ve CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it practically and in a tactile way,” Blunt explained. “And you know when you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you’re like ‘That sounds nice and cozy.’ There was nothing cozy about wearing these suits. Mine was, like, 85 pounds.”

In fact, Blunt added, she “started to cry” the first time she tried on the suit in question.

“It was so heavy that the first time I put it on I just started to cry,” she said lightheartedly. “I just started to cry in front of Tom and he didn’t know what to do and he just stared at me and was like, ‘I know, I know, I know.’ And I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m gonna get through this shoot’ and I started to cry. I was like, ‘I’m just feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot’ and he literally goes, he stared at me for a long time not knowing what to do and he goes, ‘Come on. Stop being such a pussy, okay?’ And I did laugh and then we got through it but the training was intense. It was, like, twice a day we trained for it.”

Thanks to idiots, Blunt’s remarks were, in some cases, twisted to sound as though there were ill feelings between herself and Cruise. While those who actually listened to the podcast interview know that such an interpretation is willfully false, Blunt made certain to make that even more clear by telling E! News in a statement that she and her co-star still laugh about the comment to this day.

“It’s ludicrous that it’s being spun as something that offended me,” she said, adding that was not the case and that she was (as, again, is made clear in the original interview) merely reflecting on a lighthearted moment between two actors.

Elsewhere in the discussion, Blunt briefly addressed being injured during an aerial stunt on the Edge of Tomorrow set and also spoke on the title confusion surrounding the film, including its eventual inclusion of the Live Die Repeat title into its marketing. The latter, she noted, proved frustrating for her and Cruise both. Listen to the full chat here.

The possibility of a sequel was also quickly broached during Blunt’s podcast appearance. As fans already know, chatter about a possible continuation of the story has persisted for some time now, with Liman himself addressing the possibility in an extended Collider interview last year. According to Liman, at least, all hope is not lost with regards to a sequel.
