Canadian Sarah Polley Surprised By ‘Women Talking’ Oscar Noms: “Expectations Were Low for Today”

Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley took to social media to say she wasn’t expecting to receive Academy Awards nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for her film Women Talking.

“I’m very happy today and so grateful to the incredible collective cast and crew who made Women Talking,” Polley wrote on Twitter.
 

In a subsequent tweet, Polley expressed that she had low expectations for the nominations and booked a routine doctor’s appointment instead of being home to celebrate.

Though it seems Polley hadn’t planned anything herself, on Instagram, she posted a picture of celebratory balloons with the caption “World’s Cutest Husband.”

In a post after that, Polley took a picture with Miriam Toews, the Canadian woman who wrote the book Women Talking on which the film is based.

“Celebrated last night with the woman who wrote the novel. The brilliant, amazing Miriam Toews,” Polley wrote. “So grateful for her and her gigantic brain.”

Polley wasn’t the only Canadian to get nominated for an Academy Award this week. Brendan Fraser was nominated in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for his work on The Whale while James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water got nominated for four separate categories including Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Production Design, and Best Visual Effects.

The 2023 Academy Awards will air Sunday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m.
