Toronto Police Officer Charged With Manslaughter of Teen in 2021

A Toronto police officer has been charged with the manslaughter of a 19-year-old Brampton teen that occurred in 2021.

The incident occurred in late April 2021 when Calvin Au, the officer in question, and another officer⁠—both off-duty⁠—saw what they deemed was the sale of a counterfeit watch. The two officers then allegedly chased the teen, Chadd Facey, and tackled him to the ground. Facey later died in the hospital.

The two officers then allegedly left the scene and neglected to report what had happened.

“It has been clear to our family that there was some kind of misconduct that had occurred in respect of Chadd’s death,” Fay Fagan, Facey’s mother, said in a statement via her legal counsel. “We are happy to finally see that the officer is being held accountable for his actions.”

Per CTV News, the Toronto Police Service issued a statement as well explaining that AU, a veteran of the force for over eight years, would be suspended immediately.

“At the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, the Toronto Police Service will complete two additional, separate investigations. An investigation by the Service’s Professional Standards investigation Unit in to the events of April 26, 2021 and the conduct of Constable Au and Constable Gurmakh Benning, who does not face criminal charges, will resume,” the statement read.

Au is slated to appear in court on Mar. 2.
