One of Britain’s most well-known astrologers, Margaret Lake, also known as Mystic Meg, has died following a short illness, according to The Sun.
The 80-year-old, who rose to fame in the ‘90s with her weekly National Lottery predictions and long-running tabloid column, passed away in the early hours of Thursday (March 9) after suffering from the flu.
“Without any question, she was Britain’s most famous astrologer by a million miles,” her long-time agent ,Dave Shapland, told the newspaper. “Nobody came close to Meg in that respect. She was followed by millions in this country and also around the world. She even became part of the English language; if a politician, somebody from showbiz or ordinary people in the street are asked a tricky question, they will say: ‘Who do you think I am, Mystic Meg?’ It shows what an impact she made.”
Victoria Newton, the editor of The Sun, added: “This is devastating news. We have lost an icon. Our brilliant and incomparable Meg was synonymous with The Sun—she was a total legend. We loved her and so did our readers. For more than two decades, Mystic Meg has been a must-read column and cemented her as Britain’s most famous astrologer.”
Born on July 27, 1942, in Accrington, Lancashire, Lake inherited her crystal ball from her grandmother, who is said to have fled Russia in 1888 with the ball and a set of Tarot cards.
She started her phone-line horoscope readings in 1989 and worked her way up to become the newspaper’s regular astrologer, soon becoming a household name.
In 2004, a previous £9.3 million Lotto winner credited Mystic Meg with prompting her to check her ticket after she had hidden it in a biscuit tin next to her bed:. “I read Mystic Meg in The Sun and it said don’t forget to check your lottery ticket,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it when I realised it had come true.”
R.I.P. Mystic Meg.
