The Oscars are back with returning host Jimmy Kimmel, who previously took on the role for the 2017 and 2018 editions of the annual celebration of cinema.

Heading into Sunday’s big night, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s A24 hit Everything Everywhere All at Once led the 2023 nominees class with nods in 11 different categories, Best Picture among them. The fittingly ubiquitous film is joined in that category by All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, Triangle of Sadness, Women Talking, and Top Gun: Maverick.

The latter, as some readers will note, was previously named the best movie of the year by Complex. As a tribute to the film, this year’s ceremony opened with a U.S. Navy flyover.

“As someone who grew up in a Naval Aviation family watching F-14s in Miramar, attended TOPGUN (U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School) in 2012, and advised during filming on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in 2019, it’s an absolute honor to lead the flyover as a tribute to Top Gun: Maverick,” Lt. Cmdr. Doug Morrow of VFA-122 said of the opening segment. “The movie is the ultimate love letter to Naval Aviation and all the sailors around the globe who are currently standing watch.  It’s humbling to be a part of this year’s Oscars celebration.”

Back in February, notably, members of the Academy mourned the death of former Academy President Walter Mirisch. The producer, 101, served as Academy President from 1973-1977.

“Walter was a true visionary, both as a producer and as an industry leader,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said in a joint statement last month. “He had a powerful impact on the film community and the Academy, serving as our President and as an Academy governor for many years. His passion for filmmaking and the Academy never wavered, and he remained a dear friend and advisor.”

Also revealed in the weeks leading up to the 2023 ceremony was word that a “crisis team” had been developed following Will Smith’s slapping of Chris Rock during last year’s broadcast. Per Kramer, who revealed this development in a Time interview, those behind the scenes of this year’s ceremony have “run many scenarios” in preparation.

See a full list of this year’s winners below. This story will be updated throughout Sunday’s broadcast, with winning titles and actors being listed in bold.
