On Wednesday, six construction workers were killed when a car crashed into a work zone on the Baltimore Beltway after attempting to change lanes, CBS News reports.

Maryland State Police confirmed 54-year-old Adrienna Lea tried to change lanes at around midday on Wednesday, but their Acura hit the passenger side of a Volkswagen that had stopped because it was disabled. Lea lost control of the vehicle, and the car went through temporary barriers and struck multiple workers. Lea was taken to a nearby hospital, and no one else was in the car at the time of the crash. The driver of the Volkswagen, 20-year-old Melachi Brown, did not report any injuries.

An investigation into the crash has been launched, and the six construction worker victims will be identified when their next of kin have been notified. “On behalf of all the residents of Baltimore County, we offer our sincere condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in today’s tragic crash and my prayers remain with those injured in this horrific incident,” tweeted Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski.

The crash on I-695 resulted in the closure of lanes in both directions for several hours. Bridget Brown, who said her son was on the highway at the time of the crash, told WJZ that she saw “people running” and “ambulances coming” when she took a back road after she was told her to avoid the roads. “I didn’t see the crash, just the commotion,” she said.
