The human remains discovered inside of a storage unit in west central Illinois have been identified as a former police chief, CBS News reports.

In a news release shared by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, it was announced the remains discovered last year belonged to 71-year-old Richard R. Young, who formerly served as the chief of police for Maquon village. 50-year-old Marcy Oglesby has been charged with first-degree murder, and concealing the death of a person. She is currently in custody at the Knox County Jail, and has maintained her innocence.

The remains of Young were found at Roberts Self Storage in Maquon on Oct. 6, 2022 following reports of a bad odor coming from a storage unit. On Tuesday the sheriff’s office got confirmation that the remains belonged to Young following the use of DNA evidence which they compared to samples provided by his relatives.

Oglesby previously claimed the bad odor coming from the unit was actually from a dead opossum, although she eventually admitted there was a body inside a box that she had refused to open for authorities. “It’s hard to wrap your head around that somebody could be so evil,” said Young’s former sister-in-law Denise Kruzan in an interview with WQAD-TV. According to a toxicology report, a high level of a toxic chemical was found in Young’s system. A cause of death has not been determined, but Knox County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jeremy Moore confirmed last month that Oglesby had been in a relationship with the victim.
