Conservative politician Andrew Edwards is being investigated after an audio recording of him being supremely racist was discovered.
On the 16-second recording, the speaker says: “Nothing wrong with the skin colour at all. I think all white men should have a Black man as a slave or Black woman as a slave, you know? There’s nothing wrong with skin colour—it’s just that they’re lower class than us white people.”
While the context of the recording itself is not yet known, it is understood that the recording was then sent to Pembrokeshire County Council’s monitoring officer.
Issuing a pre-written statement, Edwards, who represents the Haverfordwest Prendergast ward, said: “I am aware of such serious allegations being made against me. This is why I have self-referred to the Public Services Ombudsman for an independent evaluation. It is now in the hands of legal experts and the ombudsman. It would be unfair on the process for me to comment.”
The Conservative Party has now suspended Edwards while the investigation is ongoing.
Stand Up To Racism West Wales said the primary school governor and self-employed hairdresser was the “worst example of a [school] Governor” it had “come across” and that “he should not be allowed to be in a position where he has contact with impressionable school children ever again.”
The council’s Conservative group leader, Di Clements, said Edwards left the party group on the council on Tuesday (April 11) but would not comment further until the ombudsman’s report.
