The United States military says 10 innocent civilians—including seven children—were killed in a U.S. airstrike in Kabul, Afghanistan last month.
“This strike was taken in the earnest belief that it would prevent an imminent threat to our forces and the evacuees at the airport, but it was a mistake,” Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, head of U.S. Central Command, said during a Friday news conference. “As the combatant commander. I am fully responsible for this strike and its tragic outcome,” McKenzie, who oversees U.S. military operations in the region, added.
The Pentagon initially claimed the Aug. 29 airstrike had targeted an ISIS safehouse, where Islamic State members were allegedly plotting an attack against U.S. forces.
