Regina Hall to Star in Robert De Niro-Produced ‘Midnight Run’ Sequel

Universal Pictures is developing a sequel to 1988’s Midnight Run, and Regina Hall is attached to star in the project. Robert De Niro who starred in the original, is set to produce.

While story details regarding the project remain under wraps, it’s expected to be a build upon the story of the 1988 original. Writer Aeysha Carr, best known for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is working on the script for Universal, per the Hollywood Reporter. De Niro is also attached to produce the project, as is Hall under her RH Negative label.

Originally released in 1988, Midnight Run is an action-comedy film that followed De Niro’s bounty hunter Walsh as he hunted Jonathan “The Duke” Mardukas, played by the late Charles Grodin. Eventually, the two are forced into evading both the mob and the FBI as they travel across the country, and it’s not long before they start getting on each other’s nerves. Also starring in the film is the late and great Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton, Dennis Farina, and Joe Pantoliano.

Universal has been attempting to get a sequel to the film off the ground for years, although there was a series of three made-for-TV sequels produced in the ‘90s that featured none of the same cast or creative team.

Regina Hall is currently starring in Showtime’s dark comedy series Black Monday, and appeared in the comedy-drama Breaking News in Yuba County earlier this year. De Niro also has a slew of new projects on the way, including a new David O. Russell film, the thriller Wash Me in the River, and Martin Scorsese’s highly-anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon.
