Patton Oswalt Reacts to Video Showing Him Predict ‘Book of Boba Fett’ Scene in ‘Parks and Recreation’ Years Ago

In a 2013 episode of Parks and Recreation, Patton Oswalt delivered a speech about Boba Fett that appears to bear a striking resemblance to the new Star Wars Disney+ show The Book of Boba Fett.

As pointed out by Collider, the first episode of the show features a flashback sequence that shows how the fan favorite bounty hunter was able to survive his fate in George Lucas’ original trilogy of films. The character appeared to die in 1983’s Return of  the Jedi when he fell into the Sarlacc pit, but The Book of Boba Fett shows what happened after that. Turns out the character lived on, and he was able to cut himself out of the Sarlacc’s stomach and climb out of the sand to safety.

In Season 5 episode 19 of Parks and Recreation, Patton Oswalt’s character Garth Blundin delivers a Star Wars filibuster detailing what he wants to see from the series after the conclusion of the films. “We pan down from the twin suns of Tatooine. We are now close on the mouth of the Sarlacc pit,” said Blundin. “After a beat, the gloved Mandalorian armor gauntlet of Boba Fett grabs on to the sand outside the Sarlacc pit, and the feared bounty hunter pulls himself from the maw of the sand beast.”

In case it wasn’t already clear, Oswalt’s character got a lot of things right about Boba Fett’s fate long before the show confirmed it. Side by side, it appears as though the hilarious scene could have even inspired The Book of Boba Fett.

After it was pointed out to Oswalt on Twitter, he reacted with enthusiasm.

“To say I’m touched is putting it lightly,” he wrote. “And yeah, Book of Boba Fett ROCKS. YOU’RE WELCOME.”

In an interview with the Observer last year, Oswalt detailed how that scene came together and said that a lot of it was improvised from his own extensive knowledge of Star Wars. “They didn’t yell cut, so I didn’t want to be unprofessional and stop, so the panic kind of locked in, and I guess my response was to dump every bit of Star Wars and pop-culture trivia I have in my brain,” he said.

If The Book of Boba Fett needs more writers for its next season, Oswalt seems like he’d be a good fit.
