Paramount Announces ‘Knuckles’ Series Starring Idris Elba, Third ‘Sonic’ Film

With Knuckles set to appear in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Paramount has already decided to give the beloved character his own series.  ​​​​

Per Deadline, the speedy Echidna is getting his own spin-off series, with Idris Elba set to voice the character, as he does in the Sonic sequel. Paramount announced the news on Tuesday, alongside confirmation that it’s already moving ahead with a third movie in the Sonic series.

The announcement of the new film and Paramount+ series came during the Viacom Investor Event.

“For more than three decades, Sonic the Hedgehog’s universe of vibrant, unique characters has generated one of the most passionate fanbases,” Robbins said, per Deadline. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with SEGA, Neal Moritz, and all our creative partners as we explore additive ways to holistically scale the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise across platforms and captivate its loyal audience around the world.”

Haruki Satomi, the CEO of Sega Corporation, also shared his excitement for the news, saying that “Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come.”

Also on Tuesday, John Krasinski announced that A Quiet Place 3 will be arriving in 2025, while Seth Rogen’s 2023 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film will branch into a new villain-focused film series on Paramount+, per IGN. 

“As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the ‘Teenage’ part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most, and as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us,” Rogen previously said about the film itself, which was announced in 2020. “I mean, not disregarding the rest, but really using that as a kind of jumping off point for the film.”

That’s not all for animated creatures, either, as SpongeBob SquarePants was announced to be getting three character spin-off films coming to Paramount+, starting in 2023. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theaters on April 8, 2022.
