Kim Kardashian Legally Single After Judge Grants Her Request Amid Divorce From Kanye West

Kim Kardashian is legally single.

TMZ reports that Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Steve Cochran on Wednesday approved Kardashian’s request to be granted single status in the eyes of the law amid her divorce proceedings with Kanye West. As a result, Kim will be dropping West from her last name.

Although the couple hasn’t completely settled their financial and custody issues, the ruling will allow both parties to become legally divorced. In other words, Kanye is now legally a single person as well.

According to the outlet, Kim joined this morning’s hearing via zoom, while Kanye was represented by his new lawyer Samantha Spector. Spector did not object to Kardashian being declared single.

However, Kanye’s presented the judge with three conditions. The judge approved Ye’s request that “any right to get reimbursement of money that’s supposed to be divided up will be preserved in case either of them dies.”

Cochran also denied the following two conditions: Kim “would not transfer any assets she had in trust”; and Kim would waive the “marital privilege,” which protects communications privately disclosed between a husband and wife.

The ruling arrives over two months after Kardashian initially requested the judge to restore her single status.

“I very much desire to be divorced,” she stated in December, while maintaining that Kanye’s social media posts had caused “emotional distress,” as she asked that he kept their divorce private.

Back in February, Kardashian reflected on the couple’s divorce in an interview with Vogue, where the reality TV star explained she “did what made other people happy” for a long time.

“For so long, I did what made other people happy,” Kardashian said. “And I think in the last two years I decided, I’m going to make myself happy. And that feels really good. And even if that created changes and caused my divorce, I think it’s important to be honest with yourself about what really makes you happy. I’ve chosen myself. I think it’s okay to choose you.”
