Google PlayFour teens were arrested after they carjacked an elderly woman and dragged her for over a block down the road, ultimately killing her, People reports.
73-year-old Linda Frickey was leaving her job at Security Plan Insurance in New Orleans. when the teens allegedly stole her car and dragged her down the block as she remained tangled in her seatbelt. Frickey lost her arm while being pulled, and was found dead on the scene.
Police say that the mother of one of the teens involved turned her daughter in to the police once she learned of the crime.
“The mother of one of the 15-year-old female suspects turned her daughter in to police. Later in the evening, officers located and arrested the male suspect and one of the female suspects at the location after receiving information from the male suspect’s parents,” the New Orleans Police Department wrote in a statement. “The remaining female suspect surrendered to police this morning (March 22).”
A 17-year-old male, 16-year-old female, and another 15-year-old female turned themselves in shortly after and are being charged on one count of second-degree murder. They were booked at the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision, on the behalf of these parents, and I want to commend them for doing the right thing,” NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson added in a press conference on Tuesday. “It’s very painful to turn in your child for something you know they were not raised to be.”
Frickey’s family is still reeling after the devastating loss. The elderly woman’s husband had just retired, and she had planned to retire in a month, as the couple was looking forward to spending more time together and with their granddaughter.
“Linda should have lived to be 100 years old, still helping everybody,” Frickey’s sister-in-law, Kathy Richard, told Fox8. “She didn’t have the chance to see her son get married next year and her granddaughter was only seven years old. She didn’t get enough time with her. She did not deserve to go that way.”
