A man in Texas was arrested this week after police found the “skeletal remains of a male” inside his home. Those remains, police say, are believed to be those of the 67-year-old man’s son.

The individual in question has been identified as David McMichael, per NBC News, and charged with abuse of a corpse. According to a press release from the New Boston Police Department, local law enforcement arrived at McMichael’s residence after receiving a welfare check request. At the scene, they encountered McMichael, who told them he had a body “in his kitchen.” He also told the officers the body was that of his son, who died in May 2018.

said they entered McMichael’s home and found the remains. Shortly after, McMichael was “taken into custody without issue.” Further examination of the remains determined that the body in question was a male, “possibly Jason McMichael,” with the Texarkana Crime Scene unit also involved with the on-scene investigation. Additional identity-confirming procedures will be carried out by the team at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

McMichael has been confirmed to have been booked into the Bi-State Detention Center on Wednesday. Online jail records show a listed $50,000 surety bond for McMichael, who has been formally charged with abuse of a corpse without legal authority. As noted in a separate report from the San Antonio Express-News, still unclear is the manner of death, as well as exactly how long the skeletal remains had been in McMichael’s kitchen.
