Google PlayJim Carrey, who recently said he’s “fairly serious” about retiring from acting, has revealed what could convince him to do a third Ace Ventura film.
In an interview with E! News, embedded below, Carrey spoke about his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and fielded questions about doing belated sequels to 1996’s The Cable Guy and ’94’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
“I think after the fact, when there’s been a lot of years, unless some genius person, director, auteur comes to you with a completely new take on what’s going on, you know. If Chris Nolan came to me and said ‘I want to make Ace Ventura real and I want to do something, you know, something more interesting’…then I might listen,” the Dawn FM guest said with a laugh. “But for the most part, you know, after a certain time there’s not one cell in your body that is that person anymore so you end up just imitating what you did in the old days and the original inspiration isn’t there.”
For folks not keeping track, Dumb and Dumber To did arrive in 2014, a full 20 years after its predecessor.
Tenet and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan is currently busy at work on his J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic, which is set to star Cillian Murphy in the lead role alongside an absolutely stacked supporting cast. Considering the type of projects he’s worked on in the past, it seems unlikely he would ever dabble in the Ace Ventura universe.
The second film in the series, When Nature Calls, released all the way back in 1995. However, last year it was reported that the writers behind Sonic the Hedgehog were working on a third movie in the Ace franchise.
“Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers,” revealed Park Circus, the distributor that works with franchise rights holder Morgan Creek. It’s unclear what the status of that project is, or if Carrey will be involved in any shape or form.
The franchise rights holders might want to act soon if Carrey is as serious as he seems about retirement. “I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like—and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists—I have enough,” he said in a recent Access Hollywood interview. “I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
