A substitute teacher who taught at Frannie Fitzgerald Elementary in Woodbridge, Virginia has been arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly slapped an eight-year-old student who spat on him, FOX 5 DC reports.

Eman Mohammed Alkindi, 44, faces charges of assault and battery for the April 1 incident. Authorities say an eight-year-old male student grew upset at the teacher and spat on him. Alkindi then reportedly smacked the boy in the face and left the classroom. Other school staff members who were in the class reported the incident to the school administration who then called the police. Alkindi was arrested the following day and has since been released on a court summons.

In a letter sent to parents, Fitzgerald Elementary School’s principal George Wright confirmed the substitute was charged with assault and battery and had since resigned from teaching.

The arrest is the latest criminal incident to occur in the Prince William County school district. A student at Hylton High School was previously arrested on Thursday after brandishing a firearm that turned out to be a BB gun during a dispute. The students involved reportedly ended the argument once the gun was pulled.

“The parties eventually separated and the police were contacted,” said Prince William County police spokesman Nathan Probus. Officers later found and arrested Jose Angil Muller, who was charged with brandishing a firearm on school grounds.

The incident also comes after an Indiana teacher was charged with battery after he was caught on video slapping a student in March.

NBC News reported that 61-year-old Michael Hosinski smacked the student on Feb. 25 in the hallway at Jimtown High School in Elkhart. Hosinski was arrested on a preliminary charge of battery, a level six felony in Indiana.
