More than a decade after the first film broke several box office records, James Cameron is taking us back to Pandora this December with Avatar: The Way of Water.

The teaser trailer for the sequel to 2009’s Avatar dropped on Monday, which you can watch up top.

Scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 16, Avatar: The Way of Water will star original cast members Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch.

Joining the cast are Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Edie Falco, Vin Diesel, and Oona Chaplin, among others.

The official synopsis is as follows: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure.”

Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four sequels that 20th Century Studios plans to release in the coming years, with Avatar 3 set for a 2024 release.

“We mixed the schedules for ‘2’ and ‘3’ together, based on the types of scenes and the environments,” Cameron told Variety last December. “I said, let’s just treat it like it’s a six-hour miniseries and we’re only going to go to Frankfurt once. We’re going to shoot all the scenes from ‘2’ and ‘3’ at the same time. That was more or less the motif.”

Released in December 2009, Avatar became the highest-grossing film ever, taking home $2.84 billion at the worldwide box office.
