Parents File Lawsuit Against Son and Daughter-in-Law for Not Having Grandchild

A couple in India filed a lawsuit against their son and his wife because they have not given them a grandchild after being married for six years, BBC reports.

Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad are claiming “mental harassment” since they allegedly used up all of their savings on their son only for he and his wife to prevent them from having a “grandchild to play with” during retirement. They are seeking nearly $650,000 in the event that a child is not born within a year.

Prasad alleges $65,000 went towards sending their son to the United States in 2006 in order for him to get his pilot license. According to The Times of India, he returned to India the following year and lost his job. His parents allegedly supported him financially for the next two years until he got back on his feet and got a job as a pilot.

In 2016, his parents arranged his marriage to Shubhangi Sinha and covered a number of related costs, including the wedding reception, an $80,000 luxury car, and a honeymoon aboard. Six years later, the couple wants to recoup what they believe to be lost money without a grandchild.

“My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby,” Prasad explained. “At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable.” AK Srivastava, lawyer for the Prasads, said, “It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. They had been waiting for years to become grandparents.”

The couple’s petition is expected to be heard in court later this month.
