The cousin of Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams was killed this week in a shooting at a California park full of children and families.
KTVU and KGO report Ralph Fields Jr. was fatally shot around 6 p.m. Tuesday at Jack Farrell Park in East Palo Alto. Police said more than 30 children were at the park at the time of the shooting, with a youth softball team practicing on a nearby field.
The shooting stemmed from an altercation between two rival groups, which led to guns being drawn and more than 30 bullets being exchanged.
Footage has since circulated social media, including a video in which a girl playing tag began running from the playground as gunfire erupts in the distance.
“This was not a random act,” Interim Police Chief Jeff Liu said during a news conference. “Shooting and violence, especially at our parks with kids playing is completely unacceptable. We need to come together as a community and send a message that this type of activity will not be tolerated.”
Pastor Paul Bains, Founder & President of WeHope, added that the city will not tolerate “any type of violence,” especially in the presence of children.
“There is a street code that’s out there. We don’t condone any type of violence, but you even broke the street code, by shooting where kids were,” Bains told reporters.
In addition to Fields Jr., two other shooting victims were transported to local hospitals. A fourth shooting victim was identified but did not request treatment, according to authorities.
