Police discovered 31 bodies in various stages of decomposition and the cremated remains of 16 others at a funeral home in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

As WDRB reported, authorities located the corpses and remains at Lankford Funeral Home and Family Center around 10 p.m. on July 1, after receiving a tip that the bodies had started to stack up after the owner allegedly failed to process all of them in time. Locals had complained about a strong smell coming from the business after its air conditioning broke.

“They were located throughout the entire business in different locations,” Maj. Isaac Parker told WDRB. “Some of which had been there from as early as March.” Parker added that various bodies were “in the advanced stages of decomposition.” A refrigerated semi-truck pulled up to the funeral home shortly after police investigated the scene, per WHAS-11. The remains have since been transferred to the Clark County Coroner’s Office, where authorities hope to identify the individuals.

No suspects have been charged in connection with the discovery of the bodies, according to Parker. “We’re working with the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that the investigation is efficient and successful,” he said.
