Google PlayA gunman opened fire at the Greenwood Park Mall in Indiana Sunday, killing three and wounding two others, the New York Times reports.
Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said they started to receive calls regarding a shooting in the food court of the mall around 6 p.m. The suspect, who has only been described as an adult male, entered the mall with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition. He was fatally shot by an armed civilian.
“It appears that a good Samaritan that was armed observed the shooting in progress and shot the shooter,” Ison said.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been determined.
Witnesses told WTHR that they heard 20 gunshots fired, while Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said the incident was contained to the food court. Ison noted a “suspicious” backpack was left in a mall bathroom and has since been recovered.
The two who were wounded in the shooting have been taken to the hospital for treatment. No word on the severity of their injuries. Ison only identified the victims as a male and four females, one of which being a 12-year-old girl who sustained a minor back injury.
“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said in a statement via Facebook. “Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders.”
