Google PlayEarlier today, Buckingham Palace made the announcement that Queen Elizabeth II was under medical supervision at her home in Balmoral, which is in Aberdeen, Scotland, after doctors had become concerned for her health.
Describing her condition as “comfortable”, the statement read, “Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.”
The statement was considered unusual because typically the palace never comments on the Queen’s medical condition, which is considered to be private. The Queen had been scheduled to take part in a virtual meeting of the Privy Council—of senior ministers—but these were cancelled last minute. She had last been seen on Tuesday when she appointed Liz Truss as the new prime minister at Balmoral.
Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were already at Balmoral when the statement was made. Her daughter Princess Anne, who was already in Scotland at the time, made her way to Balmoral as well. Her grandson, the Duke of Cambridge, along with her other sons, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex, and his wife Sophie, arrived at Aberdeen airport just before 4pm BST. The Duke of Sussex, who had been scheduled to attend a charity event in London, is also on his way to Balmoral. The Duchess of Cambridge has remained at Windsor with their children.
Besides that, not too much is known about the situation at Balmoral. BBC One has cancelled all broadcasting until 6pm this evening, replacing it with rolling coverage of scenes outside Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Buckingham Palace, and all broadcasters have changed into black clothes.
Although it’s still speculation at this point, the common consensus is that the Queen is expected to pass away sooner rather than later. Our thoughts are with the Queen and the Royal family at this time.
