Google PlayA shooting occurred in Uvalde, Texas on Thursday. Few concrete details are currently available about the incident, which transpired in Memorial Park in the city’s downtown around 5:30 p.m. San Antonio-based KSAT learned that a juvenile suspect is being sought, and that two juveniles were injured.
Meanwhile a journalist at the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE, Tony Plohetski, tweeted, “As many as six, but possibly as few as two people, have been shot in Uvalde’s downtown Memorial Park, Sen. Roland Gutierrez confirms, an epicenter of grief after the May 24th shooting. Police are looking for a shooter, who is not thought to have used an assault rifle.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety posted just after 8 p.m., “We are working with the Uvalde Police Department and Sheriff’s Office following a suspected gang related shooting at Memorial Park. This information is preliminary, as the situation develops we will work with local law enforcement to provide updates.”
A police notice on Facebook closer to the time of the incident read, “Please AVOID the area of the Uvalde Memorial Park. The Uvalde Police Department is currently investigating a shooting with injured victims.”
It’s been less than four months since 21 people, 19 of whom were children, were murdered in a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School. The May 24 tragedy resulted in widespread criticism of law enforcement’s actions, accountability for which is still being meted out.
