Google PlayHenry Cavill has shed more light in his return to the role of Superman, saying this version will be “enormously joyful.”
“The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope,” Cavill said during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast at 92NY in New York City, per Variety. “It’s amazing to be here now talking about it again. There is such a bright future ahead for the character. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
The British actor said he first got the call about returning while he was in the midst of filming his Netflix fantasy series The Witcher, and that he wasn’t allowed to tell the team about Superman’s return. When he was able to sneak away from filming and head to Warner Bros., he recalled slipping on the suit again for the first time, and said it was a “powerful moment.”
“I went to Warner Bros.’ studio in the UK and got back in the suit,” Cavill said. “It was a very powerful moment for me. I wasn’t sure how I would feel…whether it would be something very emotionally connective because I put the ‘Man of Steel’ suit back on. I chose that one in particular because of the nostalgia attached to the suit. It was important for me to be standing there and enjoying that moment. That is one of the top moments in my career. It feels great to have the opportunity to wear it again.”
He added, “I told myself I’m gonna let it sit and simmer in the background. I never lost hope, that was the key for me.” However, he was unable to give any more information about the next Superman film.
THR wrote the “intention is for Cavill to star in at least one solo Superman movie,” with Cavil’s last solo Superman being 2013’s Man of Steel. He also co-headlined 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice; both from director Zack Snyder.
Cavil initially confirmed his return as Superman in a social media post
“I wanted to make it official: I am back as Superman,” he wrote at the time. “Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”
