Instagram has announced the recipients of the 2022 #BlackVisionaries grant program, a newly launched effort that aims to showcase, uplift, and invest in Black creatives.

This year’s recipients are a mix of artists, designers, and small-business owners who were selected by a committee led by writer/curator Antwaun Sargent. Other committee members included Elle Decor editor-in-chief Asad Syrkett, Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth Carter; and Metaverse’s head of design Ian Spalter.

The recipients will receive a total of $650,000; five will get a $100,000 Visionary Small Business Grant, and the other five will get a $30,000 Emerging Visionary Grant, which is designated for U.S.-based creatives who work in art and design. Those that received the former grants are Black Fashion Fair, Dark Matter University, Pacific, Strada, and The Black School. Albert Hicks, Anaïs Duplan, Christopher Joshua Benson, Cornelius Tulloch, and Jaline McPherson received the Emerging Visionary Grant.

The Brooklyn Museum and Instagram will also provide mentorship to each of the #BlackVisionaries recipients. This portion of the program is a collaborative effort with Mobile Makers, a nonprofit organization that conducts design and skill-building workshops to Chicago and Boston youth.

“Community builds community, and that’s the intentionality behind what we’re trying to establish here,” Sargent said in a press release. “It is the financial support, mentorship, connections and the emphasis on storytelling that, combined, are meant to provide a framework for the boundless development of these recipients.”
