‘Flashdance’ Singer Irene Cara Dead at 63

Irene Cara, the Oscar-winning singer best known for performing the title track of the 1983 film Flashdance, has died at the age of 63.

Cara’s publicist  Judith Moose announced the late performer’s death on Saturday via Twitter. “It is with profound sadness that on behalf of her family I announce the passing of Irene Cara,” 

“The Academy Award winning actress, singer, songwriter, and producer passed away in her Florida home,” she continued. “Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be released when information is available.”

The statement concluded, “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date.”

Cara is perhaps best known for singing “Flashdance… What A Feeling,” off the soundtrack of 1983’s Flashdance, which starred Jennifer Beals as an aspiring dancer.

Cara earned two Grammy awards for the song, Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or A Television Special, which she shared with other writers, and for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
