Google PlayIn a clip from an upcoming 60 Minutes interview, Prince Harry explained why he decided to go public about his and Meghan Markle’s issues with the royal family.
“Every single time I’ve tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife,” he told Anderson Cooper. “You know, the family motto is never complain, never explain, but it’s just a motto.” Cooper added that there’s been “a lot of complaining and a lot of explaining” through “leaks” from Buckingham Palace, though.
“They will feed or have a conversation with the correspondent,” Prince Harry added. “And that correspondent will literally be spoon-fed information and write the story. And at the bottom of it they will say that they’ve reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment. But the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting. So when we’re being told for the last six years, ‘We can’t put a statement out to protect you.’ But you do it for other members of the family. It becomes… there becomes a point when silence is betrayal.”
The full interview with Cooper is scheduled to air on Sunday, January 8 ahead of the release of his upcoming memoir. He also sat down for an interview with UK broadcaster ITV. Per TMZ, Harry said that regardless of the problems he and Meghan have had with Buckingham Palace, he still wants his father King Charles III and his brother Prince William in his life. “I want a family, not an institution,” he said. “They’ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile.
The latest comments from Harry come less than a month after Netflix debuted its documentary series on him and his wife, Harry & Meghan. He’s scheduled to release his memoir Spare on January 10, which promises an inside look at his upbringing and estrangement from his family.
