An attempt at making off with an allegedly stolen car ended quickly when the driver went over an embankment, authorities say.

The incident occurred in the North Caldwell area of New Jersey, per regional outlet News12, and began with local police responding to a report of stolen vehicle on Jan. 1. In a statement shared to Facebook, the Borough of North Caldwell Police Department said the initial report was for a “stationary stolen vehicle.”

Once police arrived at the scene, the driver of the vehicle in question started to flee, hitting two other parked cars in the process. Quickly, the driver “lost control” of the car and drove over an embankment. Police say the car then fell more than 21 feet, ultimately landing on a house and another vehicle. No injuries were reported at the scene.

In a subsequent statement of its own, the Verona Police Department, which was also called to the scene, added that the fleeing process was initiated when several officers started to approach the car. Following the over-the-embankment crash, police aded, the driver fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended, while the passenger was found near the crashed car. Both individuals, which were not named in initial statements from police, have since been placed in the custody of North Caldwell police.

Complex has reached out to the Borough of North Caldwell Police Department and the Verona Police Department for additional comment. This story may be updated. Both agencies shared footage of the incident from different angles, as seen in the links below. In the video up top via WABC-TV, witnesses are seen being interviewed about the crash.
