Woman Drunkenly Blows Up Home, Sues Venue That Served Her

A Canadian woman drunkenly drove her car into a house, leading to an explosion that caused $10 million in damages. Now the woman is suing the concert venue that served her the alcohol.

She’s claiming that the owners are responsible for her drunken mishap.

CBC reported that the explosion happened in 2019 when Daniella Leis left a Marilyn Manson concert at the Budweiser Gardens arena in London, Ontario. Leis left the show drunk, drove the wrong way on Queen’s Avenue and finally crashed her car into a home on a different street, severing the house’s gas line.

There were no deaths, but the explosion destroyed four houses and injured seven people.

Leis pled guilty to four counts of impaired driving and was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021.

Leis and her father then filed a lawsuit against Ovations Ontario Food Services, the company that was responsible for serving alcohol the night of the concert. They claim that staffers “ejected Leis from the venue while failing to take steps to ensure she would not drive home,” as per the legal documents.

Moreover, Leis claimed that the company continued to serve her alcohol despite being aware that she was intoxicated. She also accused Ovations of putting “profit above safety” and that the damage the explosion dealt was “caused or contributed to by the negligence, breach of duty, breach of contract” by the bar.

The claim also wrote that if Leis and her father end up being required to pay any amount, then they are “entitled to contribution and indemnity from the defendant (Ovation).”
